The design assignments within 3 bachelor have a mutual denominator "living together for everybody". These exercises aim to integrate a broader level of social and spatial durability.
- The topic "living together" seeks to search for alternative forms of "community" which are based on actual social phenomena.
- The topic "for everybody" seeks to look for solutions to integrate vulnerable groups of people who require a form of care in the broader sense.
The semester is divided in 3 moments:
- The first module consists of analysing the chosen location on different levels and doing research on connecting topics.
- The second module consists of designing an "urban scenario", based on the analysis combined with a personal approach.
- The final module is the actual design assignment, following the urban and socio-spatial goals, set in module 2.
An overall approach of the design assessment is made through the theme "structure" which can be approached through different topics (typology, anthropology, construction, civic, spatial, ...).
A further demand is the exploration of the topic "collectivity".
For educational reasons, the design will have to follow the rules of the VMSW, this is the Belgian company that organises social housing.
The exercises in the design studio are highly supported by the research in the theoretical course "Typology".
Exchange students are recommended to present their "architectural" curriculum. Doing so, we can discover and explore a specific trajectory for these students within the perimeter of the regular design assignment.

Conditions | Attendance at the sessions of the design studio is required. Students must justify any absence in the design studio. In case students cannot submit (parts of) a design project in time, they should follow the guidelines at stake communicated through blackboard. |
|
|
|
Consequences | In case of legally justified absence the current project should be fully completed. Unauthorized absence at one third or more of the number of design studio sessions associated with a design studio project, results in mark 0 for the assignment at stake. Failure to submit the project on the appointed day and hour (unless justified) results in mark 0 for the assignment at stake. |
