This course deals with two important aspects of transport infrastructure namely: the design and project management of infrastructure projects for the transportation of people and/or goods.
The infrastructure design part aims to introduce the student to all relevant elements that play a role in the transport infrastructure design. This involves knowledge of individual parts of the infrastructure and the processes and tools that bring these parts together. The student will be provided an insight into the following topics:
- Introduction to the design of infrastructure
- Road categorization
- Road section - view, horizontal and vertical alignments
- Cross-sections
- Discontinuities
- Intersections
The project management part focuses on different aspects of transport mega-project management. Transport mega-projects are complex, expensive, and large infrastructure projects with a significant impact on an entire country or region. The project management part is covered from front-end planning to actual project delivery, including how to deal with stakeholders, risk, finance, complexity, innovation, governance, and ethics. This part of the course will also focus on common mistakes or risks in preparing and delivering mega-projects (such as underestimated costs, overestimated revenues, undervalued environmental impacts, and overvalued economic development effects) and practical solutions to cope with these risks.
