The student has a thorough basic knowledge of the field of business economics.
The student can conduct scientific research under supervision, more specifically:
- Select and interpret relevant, recent and scientific sources;
- Draw up a research plan;
- Select and implement scientific research methods;
- Draw logical and correct conclusions from results of data analysis;
- Write a correctly and scientifically correct research report.

|
On his/her own initiative, yet under supervision of a supervisor, the students sets up a study in the field of his/her specialization or (business) economics in the broad sense. Through this study, the student gives proof of his/her capability as a novice researcher in the field. This study is in principle academic yet may well relate to and advice on more practical issues.
Optionally (= not mandatory) the student can complete an internship as part of the master's dissertation. This possibility is subject to very strict and binding conditions:
- The student must have completed all courses of the preparatory program (if applicable).
- The student looks and applies for an internship himself/herself. The University of Hasselt cannot provide or assist in finding an internship position.
- It is not allowed to get paid for an internship.
- During the entire internship the student must be enrolled for this course (4850). The internship has to start after enrollment for the course and has to end before the defence of the master's dissertation.
- The internship has to be linked to the master's dissertation topic and this link must be confirmed upfront and in writing by the supervisor.
Procedure:
- Before contacting companies/organisations and committing to an internship position, the student contacts the contact person of this course to discuss the timing and content of the internship.
- Before the start of the internship the student makes sure
- he/she is enrolled for this course (4850);
- he/she has asked approval from the supervisor about the link between the internship and the master's dissertation topic;
- he/she sends the approval of the supervisor to the contact person to confirm the internship and request the internship agreement and
- he/she makes sure the internship agreement is signed by all parties before the internship starts. If the internship agreement is not signed before the start of the internship the student is not insured by the University of Hasselt and will act at his/her own risk.
- After the internship the student proves that the internship is linked to his/her master's dissertation by explicitly referring to the internship at least once in the master's dissertation.
