The language of instruction for this course is English. While there is no formal prerequisite, it is necessary that students possess the level of English sufficient to follow such a course.

Het blok Legal English beoogt studenten vertrouwd te maken met het Engels in een juridisch en academisch kader. De nadruk ligt op de taal waarbij het recht eerder als een medium wordt gehanteerd. Juridisch Engels is een taal die gebruikt wordt voor specifieke doeleinden en die, omwille van de relatie tot het recht, systeem specifiek is. Dit betekent dat ieder juridisch systeem of subsysteem zijn eigen specifieke terminologie en frasering heeft. Het juridisch Engels kan daarom in verschillende hoedanigheden voorkomen op nationaal, internationaal en supranationaal niveau.
Het blok behandelt de basisterminologie en woordenkeus in het bijzonder toegespitst op internationaal en Europees recht. Schrijf-, spreek-, lees- en luistervaardigheden komen aan bod. Na afloop van het blok is de student in staat om Engelstalige juridische blokken te volgen.
Het blok bestaat uit zes onderwijsbijeenkomsten die gewijd zijn aan de Europese Unie, internationaal recht, en mensenrechten. Studenten dienen tijdens de onderwijsgroepen te participeren en moeten een aantal opdrachten maken waaronder het presenteren van en debatteren over stellingen en een schriftelijke opdracht.
De volgende onderwerpen komen aan bod:
- Terminologie internationaal en Europees recht
- Europese Unie
- Verenigde Naties
- Mensenrechten (internationaal en Europees);
- Bronnen internationaal recht.

| Voorwaarden | Requirements to Pass the Course: Students have to be present at each teaching group meeting. Each student must participate in a debate through a presentation and respond to the opposing side. |

| Gevolg | Consequence of not attending all group meetings or of not participating in the debate: No grade as not all exam components have been completed. If a student cannot be present or participate in the presentation/debate for valid reasons, an alternative assignment will be prescribed as compensation. If students received no grade for the course because they failed to attend/do an alternative assignment for all group meetings, a new written assignment will be set as part of the resit. |

| Extra info | Closed book exam - all material the students need to use to complete the exam will be provided to them during the exam.
In consultation with the Education Management Team and the Student Administration, the lecturer determines the schedule and the examination format for a possible catch-up exam. The examination format may deviate from the examination format used during the regular examination period. The schedule and examination format will be communicated to the student after the request for a catch-up exam has been approved. |

| Toelichting evaluatievorm | Students can only resit the written exam and the fail mark for the
participation requirement through a written assignment. The partial
