Content

During the first semester thedesign studiowill consist of a research by design assignment linked to a thematic approach concerning the transformation and adaptation of existing buildings and sites. It will be embedded in the ongoing research by TRACE, the research team involved in adaptive reuse and heritage of the Faculty. During this process, there is considerable attention paid to heritage value, atmospheric qualities, construction details, and spatial characteristics that are no longer appropriate for new buildings.

Evaluation

Semester 1 (12,00sp)

Evaluation method
Other evaluation method during teaching period100 %
Other evaluation via design assignments + jury
Evaluation conditions (participation and/or pass)
Conditions Attendance at the sessions of the design studio is required. Students must justify any absence in the design studio. In case students cannot submit (parts of) a design project in time, they should follow the guidelines at stake communicated through blackboard or otherwise.
Consequences In case of legally justified absence the current project should be fully completed. Unauthorized absence at one third or more of the number of design studio sessions associated with a design studio project, results in mark 0 for the assignment at stake. Failure to submit the project on the appointed day and hour (unless justified) results in mark 0 for the assignment at stake.

Compulsory course material

A list with study and work material, necessary for the execution of the assignments, will be communicated to the students during the academic year

Learning outcomes
Master of Interior Architecture (English)
  •  EC
  • Can communicate a design(process) convincingly to novices and specialists in images, written and spoken word, using the appropriate visualization techniques, both digital and manual, in a balanced, targeted, and deliberate way.

  •  EC
  • Can independently apply and come up with research- and design strategies within a societal, historically defined and international context, and in function of a future oriented vision on the design of an interior space.

  •  EC
  • Can innovatively apply techniques, building constructive, and ecologic principles in the design.

  •  EC
  • Can innovatively apply the methods and theories of interior design, in particular in the domain of adaptive re-use, and can combine these efficiently with insights from human sciences, exact sciences, and the arts.

  •  EC
  • Can innovatively use materials, taking into account their characteristics, possibilities, and limitations with respect to texture, tactility, light, colour and acoustics and with a particular sensitivity to their esthetic qualities.

  •  EC
  • Can research (by design) with a sense of intuition, experiment, associative thinking, imagination and emotion and, in doing so, displays an artistic-explorative, visual-imaginative perspective.

  •  EC
  • Designs with awareness of the intermediary character of interior architecture and the societal, ethical and ecological implications of the design.

  •  EC
  • Given the complexity of designing and the design context, can independently make precise and responsible choices and develop design solutions in a multidisciplinary context and in dialogue with the stakeholders, always focusing on the user. The graduate is able to reflect critically to adjust own work, vision and process.

  •  EC
  • Has knowledge about and insight in the work field, both actual and historical, of the interior architect, is able to situate one's own practice within this framework and can implement the newest developments within the work field in one's design practice.

  •  EC
  • Initiate a personal designer profile and articulate this through an own design language and design vision.

  •  EC
  • Starting from a complex design question, can independently set up and execute relevant research, integrate the results in the design process, scientifically report about it, and interpret own and others' research results critically, in particular within the domain of adaptive re-use.
