Content

This introductory course in organization studies provides insights into:

1) dynamics of diversity and inequality (gender, race, ethnicity, language, religion, disability, class, sexual orientation and gender identity, …) in work contexts with special attention to connections between inequalities at the macro- (society and international context), meso- (organizations), and micro-level (individuals and inter-individual relations);

2) policies and practices that can be implemented to affect these dynamics with the aim of fostering inclusion and equity.

This course draws on insights from various theoretical traditions, including organizational theory, psychology, labour process theory, disability studies, queer theory, social reproduction theory, and racial capitalism. More specifically, it covers the following content:

  • The historical origins of attention to equity, diversity and inclusion in organizations.
  • The effects of diversity on group processes and outcomes in organizations, and the contextual factors affecting these processes and outcomes.
  • Organizational processes and factors that create career barriers and reproduce inequalities.
  • The relation between social identities, perceived competencies and the valuation of jobs and employees.
  • Diversity, migration and employment relations.
  • 'Traditional' diversity management practices and policies used by organizations to manage diversity, their underlying assumptions and the reasons for their effects.
  • 'Alternative' practices to manage diversity, their underlying assumptions and the reasons for their effects.
  • Resistance to (policies related to) diversity and inclusion in organizations.
