This course combines attention to foundational theory and to the practice of HRM in order to equip students with the knowledge and skills to address critical issues in HRM today. Students gain crucial insights in the development, optimization and implementation of HR strategies, policies and practices. Moreover, they gain insights in the role and responsibilities of different actors in these processes; in the organizational and societal trends shaping HRM; and in the way HR strategies contribute to sustainable economic and social impact.
More specifically, the course covers 4 main topics:
- Strategic HRM & the creation of sustainable value. The course discusses the strategic role of HRM and the way it can contribute to the creation of sustainable economic and social value for organizations and society.
- HRM in its organizational context. The course discusses the link between HRM and the broader characteristics of an organization, such as its size, organizational type (e.g., for-profit, or nonprofit), and the design of its work processes.
- HRM and different organizational actors. The course discusses the development, optimization and implementation of HR strategies and the role of different organizational actors in it. The course focuses on policies and practices related to inflow, evaluation, remuneration, training and development, career management,..., and on actors such the HR department, different managers, trade unions and other relevant stakeholders and actors.
- Current trends in HRM. The course focuses on the connection between HRM and important societal trends, with for example attention to labour market flexibilization, Artificial Intelligence, or equity, diversity and inclusion.
