The first master's design studio aims to develop a number of basic competencies with the students, structured around four key concepts: context, content, concept, and construction. These are linked to skills in design, research, management, communication, and teamwork. At the same time, the international dimension is strongly emphasized by occasionally choosing foreign project locations and opening the studios to international students, meaning that English will/can also be spoken in the studios.
In Semester 1, students are assigned to one of the two studios based on a motivation letter, with the aim of achieving a balanced distribution in terms of numbers:
- Studio “Poetry of Structure”: where the program, the architectural and structural concept, are studied through in-depth design research and a clear methodology. In this studio, the added value of structural and constructive logic is combined with strong architectural expressiveness.
- Studio ‘Crafting Circularity’: the rise of circular construction in a highly urbanised context such as Flanders calls for new design methods based on an appreciation of what already exists today. With this ambition in mind, the studio explores the interfaces and building blocks between design at the level of the building block, architecture, use of materials and detail.

Evaluation conditions (participation and/or pass) | ✔ |
Conditions | Attendance at the sessions of the design studio is required. Students must justify any absence in the design studio. In case students cannot submit (parts of) a design project in time, they should follow the guidelines at stake communicated through blackboard. |
Consequences | In case of legally justified absence the current project should be fully completed. Unauthorized absence at one third or more of the number of design studio sessions associated with a design studio project, results in mark 0 for the assignment at stake. Failure to submit the project on the appointed day and hour (unless justified) results in mark 0 for the assignment at stake. |

Additional information | During their study stay, students should master the common presentation skills (hand and computer drawing, model making including laser cutting...) of the study programmes at the faculty of Architecture and Arts of Hasselt University. |
