Content

The objective of this course unit is to enable students to understand, quantify, and predict "figures of merit" (FOMs) metrics that describe the performance of technologies, and to be able to apply these figures to a set of important technologies.

Figures of merit are crucial for commercial engineering students, as technological competition often hinges on these indicators for specific applications. Accurately assessing FOMs requires the integration of both technological and economic knowledge. To achieve this, the course is structured in three parts.

In the first part of the course, different figures of merit (e.g. efficiency, costs, net present value, lifecycle impacts, criticality) are introduced and explained.

In the second part of the course, the focus is on understanding both the working principles and the performance metrics used to describe a selection of technologies from various technological domains over time.

In the third part of the course, the students will apply the knowledge from the first and second part on a concrete technology case by means of group work.
